THE CONFERENCE
Polar Aspect’s OMAC conference is the only online secondary-school Model Arctic Council in the world today. Students play the roles of delegates from Arctic states and, unusually in model diplomacy, Indigenous peoples. Their challenge is to negotiate consensus on some of the most pressing questions facing not only the Arctic and its communities, but by extension our world as a whole.
THE ARCTIC
As the global climate changes, the Arctic has become one of the most important regions on the planet. It is also one of the most fascinating. More than a pristine wilderness or resource frontier, it is an ancestral homeland. Unlike other international fora, the Arctic Council formally brings together not only the countries of the Arctic, but also its Indigenous peoples, in order to reach consensus on difficult issues.
THE TRAINING
Model Arctic Council makes exciting and challenging demands of delegates. It takes real diplomatic know-how to build unanimous consensus amongst different states and Indigenous peoples on the issues facing this unique and special region. Polar Aspect are delighted offer a special online delegate training programme to pupils who wish to participate in future Polar Aspect MAC conferences.
